Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are quite common in the adult population, affecting 15% to 20% of adults, mostly females. The Nation spoke to Consultant Vascular and Transplant Surgeon, Dr Nalaka Gunawansa to delve into the causes of varicose veins and treatment methods

The team, headed by Prof. Mandika Wijeyaratne, Professor of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, included Lecturer in Surgery and Specialist in Vascular Transplantation Surgery, Dr. Rezni Cassim and Senior Registrar, Vascular and Transplantation Surgery, Dr. Nalaka Gunawansa and, Dr. Ms. Anuja Abayadeera, Senior Lecturer in Anaesthesia at the Colombo Medical Faculty.

Today cardio-vascular diseases are the ‘number one’ killers, followed by cancer and chest disease. Fatty liver, a result of obesity, lack of exercise and dietary patterns is an increasing problem faced by clinicians today.
